Modern puzzle games owe much of their popularity to old-school brain teasers (often found in magazines and soft-cover books) and physical jigsaw puzzles. As video games grew in popularity during the early 1980s, puzzles found their way into the mix, too. Tetris, released by Nintendo in 1989 is often cited as the grandaddy of all puzzle games and introduced an entire generation (or three!) to the concept of brain-based challenges that didn’t require Link’s sword or Mario’s super hops....

Since Qatar was chosen to host the World Cup by FIFA’s Executive Committee 10 years ago, concerns about workers building the stadiums and whether the country is suitable to host the games have been circulating. Qatar is building seven new stadiums for the finals, a new airport, new metro and new roads. Denice Froiland claimed her husband assaulted her when she returned to their home at 5039 Gardenia Court in West Lafayette. She told the police she had been out shopping. When she returned home her husband shoved her up against the wall and questioned where she had been. She said the row continued in another room, with John Froiland then locking his son in a dog crate. He proceeded to break a leg chair and struck his wife with it, according to the police....

Putin said Sunday that Russia is now developing defensive hypersonic weapons—meaning a weapon travels at five or more times the speed of sound—designed to counteract offensive hypersonic weapons deployed by other nations. “It’s very likely that we will have means to combat hypersonic weapons by the time the world’s leading countries have such weapons,” Putin said, according to Reuters, which cited a report by Russia’s RIA news agency. Hypersonic weapons—which can be armed with nuclear warheads—travel at high speeds and can maneuver in flight, making it difficult for existing defensive systems to intercept them....

In relinquishing Kherson, Russian troops will retreat from the city to the eastern bank of the Dnipro River. Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs made comments similar to Putin’s on Saturday, with its spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, saying “reaction towards destruction of civilian infrastructure is a testament to its [Ukraine’s] terrorist nature....

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) made the forecast in its daily update on the conflict on Monday. The ISW said it had taken into account Russia’s timelines, deployment plans, the weather and Moscow’s energy war with Europe. “Russian President Vladimir Putin will most likely try to continue conventional military operations in Ukraine to hold currently occupied territories, gain new ground, and set conditions for the collapse of Western support for Ukraine that he likely expects to occur this winter,” the report said....
