Kongregate has been a gaming publisher and web portal giant, but have recently been looking to shift its focus. With Flash going the way of the dinosaur in spite of some people’s efforts to save it, like Flashpoint, the company has been moving toward trying to develop games and be less of a portal for others. This coupled with a lot of strain on many due to the COVID pandemic, Kongregate chose to make some changes.

Publisher Kongregate has officially laid off several employees as well as cut developer’s ability to add new games, although devs can still make updates to their old games. This information was shared on the Kongregate forums, which will soon be switched to read-only mode. This comes about six days after the announcement for its TMNT mobile game.

“To be more specific, we’re focused on our internal game development and acquisitions rather than our legacy flash gaming platform,” Kongregate stated. “As we outlined on our website, all of the current games on Kongregate.com will remain playable, we are just not allowing any new games to be uploaded at this time.”

Unfortunately, many of the employees that lost their jobs at Kongregate were supposed to be informed in a “group meeting” sometime today, but they were instead fired via direct deposit notifications. Many of those let go took to Twitter to vent their frustrations. Kongregate later apologized, adding that “This is not how we intended our employees to find out and for that we are very sorry.”

There are many people that have been laid off due to the Coronavirus, but many devs and companies are coming together to help out by offering free games to help those stuck at home.
