Pulp Fiction is a classic piece of cinema with numerous iconic moments. One moment that continues in the discussion of the film is the section where the boxer Butch Coolidge is trapped alongside Marsellus Wallace inside the pawnshop basement. This scene features the now infamous “Gimp” who is brought out to add to the horror of what is to come. With the fate of the Gimp left unanswered within the film, Tarantino explains that it was a macabre end.

In a fan Q&A with Empire, Tarantino explained that the Gimp didn’t last long after his debut. After being knocked out by an escaped Butch, the Gimp actually died then and there. His answer explained that, “It doesn’t quite play this way in the movie, but in my mind when I wrote it, the Gimp’s dead. Butch knocked him out and then when he passed out he hung himself.” Even with his short screen time, the Gimp has passed through pop culture and even seeped into many little references in gaming.
As for the Gimp’s backstory, Tarantino goes on to explain that he was a hitchhiker that was picked up seven years before the events on that hot L.A. day. Pawnshop owner Maynard and his brother Zed took those over half a dozen years to train the perfect sex pet. This finalization of the Gimp’s plot means that it most likely won’t be appearing in any of Tarantino’s upcoming projects but the origins could have appeared in one of his many projects that failed to materialize.
Pulp Fiction recently celebrated its 25 anniversary and its impact is hardly slowing down within the media. Just recently a Cyberpunk 2077 poster featured a subtle nod to the iconic film. Even with the fate of one of Tarantino’s most out-there inclusions revealed, it likely won’t stop the references.
