Appleby is 6-5, 229 pounds and his stiff-arm, which was more like a left-handed haymaker to the helmet of Marshall defensive end Blake Keller — who is 6-2, 234 — prevented a sack and allowed him to swing a short toss out to Anthrop, who strolled into the end zone to cut the Marshall lead to 17-14 with 38 seconds remaining in the first half.
Appleby showed more toughness on a 1-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to give the Boilermakers a 21-17 lead.
