The game’s plot synopsis reads, “Reunite with Ringo, Tee, and a lovable cast of returning and new characters from Puyo Puyo Tetris for a new journey! Puyo Puyo Tetris 2’s Adventure mode will also include an overworld in which players can explore branching paths and take on side-activities, Skill Battles, a separate mode in which players can take their leveled up characters to participate in a number of challenging enemies, and brand new item cards, which allow players to assign special traits to their characters over the course of the Adventure mode, or sell them to purchase items in the in-game shop.
While it is unusual for a puzzle game series to feature a story mode, despite the issues with localizations over the years Puyo Puyo’s story has garnered a big cult following. Since its initial Japanese release on Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and Wii U in 2014, Puyo Puyo Tetris has gone on to become one of the most beloved releases of both iconic puzzle games yet, with ports to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014, Nintendo Switch in 2017, and PC in 2018.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 was first announced in the most recent Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase event, unlike the first Puyo Puyo Tetris game it will not be developed by Sonic Team, however the game will launch on next-generation consoles as well as current-generation consoles including Nintendo Switch. The game will be a timed next-generation exclusive to Xbox Series X, with a PlayStation 5 version slated for “Holiday 2020,” not unlike how Sega is also releasing Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Pre-ordered copies of the game will come with exclusive Sonic the Hedgehog themed Skill Cards to be used in-game.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 will release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on December 8, 2020, with PlayStation 5 and PC ports following.
