The blackout was good for you!

Well, if at the end of four years crime is down, welfare rolls are down, streets are clean and the budget’s balanced, people will say, “He made the right decisions and I want him to be mayor again.”

Before the blackout your critics said you were out of touch.

Look, when you get to be my age, you’re too old to change. Just be yourself. Tell the truth, look ’em in the eye and say it.

Any new plans in the works?

One of the big recommendations that we’re going to do is coordinate the dispatch of fire, police and EMS.

There was no violence. Why?

In this day and age the public won’t stand for it. And we got cops out on the street right away, particularly in neighborhoods where they thought there was a higher probability of incidents.

The GOP convention is near the blackout’s Aug. 14 anniversary. Could another blackout happen?

I think it’s unlikely. It takes a certain combination of things, whether it’s human mistakes or mechanical-design problems.

Are federal and state officials working to prevent another?

When you read the papers you don’t get a great feeling that they are addressing those issues.
